THE MOST AMAZING DAY EVER- PART 1
The simple friday starts with my roommate and I deciding to go to the natural history museum which is on the upper west side. We spend 2 hrs there (pictures to come) when we decide we are hungry. We walk 20 blocks down Columbus, practically to columbus circle looking at every restaurant’s menu in the window. Then we walk back up on Broadway, again looking at all the menus. Our hunger would fade in and out and nothing really sounded good, or it was pretty expensive. Finally, after giving up hope we settle on some diner. Moderately priced and it had everything. As we stand up to go to pay, I noticed the guy at the booth behind me had a badge with a picture of Maroon 5 on it that said, “Media.” I really thought nothing of it, I thought he worked for the record label or something of that nature. It did, however, peaked my interest so I listened in on their conversation more closely. I had been listening to them here or there through out dinner, naturally, and I knew it was a business dinner by the way they interacted. They stand up to pay as we do and this girl across from us (who I never noticed) had a Maroon 5 sweatshirt on, and the man starts talking to her. That seemed like an odd coincidence. Then two girls sitting by her said to the woman that she “tweeted and got tickets from the company on the folder” she was holding. We pay and as we exit the diner I immediately look up “Maroon 5 nyc” and the first thing that comes up is a concert on 1/31/14 at the Beacon Hotel!
The diner is right next to the Beacon Hotel! This was a sign from the Travel Fairy, a little angel that looks over me and my friend that we created to justify the amazing coincidences in our lives, mostly surrounding Maroon 5 or traveling. I remember passing the backside of the Beacon Hotel and pointing it out to my roommate. They were setting up for a concert at the time but I didn’t think of it since it’s such a small venue they tend to have smaller artists and they have shows all the time. There were some people waiting by the stage door and I wanted to shout out across the street who they were waiting for but I didn’t because I didn’t want to be embarrassing and I probably wouldn’t know who it was. HAHA jokes on me. In case you haven’t noticed, I am a HUGE Maroon 5 fan. Going on 11 years now when my tutor introduced me to Songs About Jane in 3rd grade. I went to my first Maroon 5 concert when I was 12 in 7th grade. Big. Fan. I’ve seen them in concert 4 times since then, in 3 different states.
When I found out about the concert I ran to the stage door to ask the people behind the barricades what was going on, to verify my information. It was correct and the people I was talking to won their tickets and they suggested I go to will call to see if they are selling any. I told my roommate that I had to stay and that I owed it to myself to figure out what’s going on. She’s not a fan of Maroon 5 but she understood my excitement and decided to stay with me. I went around the building to the entrance and talked to the guy at the window and he said they didn’t have any tickets to sell because it was private and everyone won their tickets. Disappointed, I understood and went into the Beacon Bar to use the restroom. Waiting in line there was a guy with a Maroon 5 shirt and he was working backstage at the concert. He said someone offered him $2,000 for his tickets! That’s crazy! But he couldn’t sell them or he would get in trouble. I went back to the stage door and as I turn the corner James Valentine is signing autographs at the door!
JAMES VALENTINE PEOPLE! The lead guitarist and total hunk! I walked passed him on the sidewalk and jumped behind the barrier so he could take a picture with me. When my turn came I told him that I was a huge fan and wished him a good show then my roommate snapped the pics of us above. He was so nice and so genuine how I always imagined him.
Afterwards, I started talking to this woman and her daughter next to me. At first I thought they were kind of obnoxious but as I started talking to them they were very nice. Her daughter, a year older than me, was having difficulty in college and we were discussing it and the mother reminded me a bit of my mom. As I got to know them more, it turns out they knew the band manager because the girl is a big fan and was called up on stage when she was 12 and somehow kept in contact with the manager all these years. Anyways, he sent her 4 tickets but there was only 2 of them so they sold the other 2 tickets (which I witnessed during the transaction). Later they found out I didn’t have tickets and they felt so bad and would have rather sold them to me than the random college girl at the tanning salon across the street. I told them that it wouldn’t have mattered because I didn’t have any money on me (but I really didn’t want to spend $100 a piece on tickets when I’ve seen them so many times before and my roommate didn’t even like them). Then she said she would have given them to me for free just because I was so nice. I told her if it was meant to be it was meant to be, which I truly believed. I have seen them before and I learned about this concert 2 hours earlier and I was just excited to be there and see the band. She really admired my attitude and said she wished her daughter was more like me.
Meanwhile, PJ Morton came out as well as their travel musician, Sam (pictured above). About an hour later Adam Levine arrives but clearly he was late and stressed so he just waved and went straight in. It was anti-climatic but I didn’t care that much having met him before.
After they all went in, I knew they weren’t coming out again but for some reason I decided to stay. I guess it was because the band manager started talking to the girl and said he would be back out in a couple minutes to talk to her, so I wanted to see what he would say to her, or more importantly if she would introduce me.
At this point my roommate went to Starbucks across the street to warm up. There were probably 5 of us still standing out there and everyone I talked to was so surprised to find out I didn’t have a ticket. As if everyone in the whole world was going to the concert. They also admired the fact that I just found out about it and went with the flow and was determined enough to stand out there. I started talking to this other girl who was also a huge fan. So much so she had a dress on that she made that had their names on it and their signatures.
She then said that someone came out here earlier offering tickets because they had extra but everyone already had some. I was amazed and said I would ask around. A few minutes later a woman came outside for a smoke and it turns out she was Mickey Madden’s girlfriend. I started talking to her and the other girl asked if she could get me a ticket and she said she would see what she could do. A second later a man walks out and the girl asks him if he has an extra ticket for me.
He says, “yeah” and goes inside. He comes back with a huge stack of tickets! He asks how many and I ask for 2. I give him a hug, amazed! I got free Maroon 5 tickets for a private concert because of random events. Things like that just don’t happen. It’s the Travel Fairy at her best!! It was unbelievable! I say goodbye to my new friends and run across the street to the Starbucks. From across the room I yell out, “K! K! I got free Maroon 5 tickets!” I was so out of breath from excitement.
The concert started in 10 minutes so we journey to the Beacon Hotel.
